Are You Speaking the Right Language?

Ever feel like what you’re saying just isn’t clicking? You explain something once—maybe twice—and yet, they still come back with questions, misunderstandings, or worse… blank stares. The reality is, your leadership communication style may not be landing the way you think. Predictive Index (PI) principles can help you understand how you naturally communicate and what adjustments you might need to make to connect better with your team. So, are you a big-picture talker? A task-driven decision-maker? A people-first persuader? Let’s break down three common communication styles and how to make them work for you and your team.

The Informal Communicator

Reference Profiles: Captain, Maverick, Promoter
You’re the type of leader who loves a good conversation but isn’t about to get bogged down in every nitty-gritty detail. Your style is informal, social, and flexible—more focused on big-picture vision than tactical execution. You probably enjoy brainstorming sessions and free-flowing dialogue, and your meetings tend to have a casual, high-energy vibe.

Pros vs. Cons:
✅ Keeps the team engaged and motivated with enthusiasm and high-level vision.
✅ Encourages a relaxed, open environment where ideas can flow.
❌ If your team needs structure and details, they might feel lost or overwhelmed.
❌ You may unintentionally signal that you don’t have time for follow-ups, leading employees to waste time trying to figure things out on their own.

How to Pivot:

  • Be intentional about letting employees know they can ask questions. Seriously, tell them outright.
  • Delegate a detail-oriented person on your team to help manage execution.
  • Hold regular check-ins and encourage employees to reach out between meetings.
  • End meetings with clear next steps and who’s responsible for what.
  • Encourage employees to take notes and document action items to ensure clarity.

The Task-Oriented Communicator

Reference Profiles: Captain, Maverick, Strategist, Venturer
You’re all about results. Your leadership style is focused, direct, and efficient—you don’t sugarcoat things, and you certainly don’t waste time with unnecessary chatter. You make decisions independently and keep communication shorter and to the point.

Pros vs. Cons:
✅ Provides clear direction and keeps projects moving forward.
✅ Removes ambiguity by prioritizing efficiency and outcomes.
❌ Can come across as blunt or uncaring, especially to more people-oriented team members.
❌ May overlook the human impact of decisions, leading to disengagement or resistance.

How to Pivot:

  • Ask questions and actively seek input from others. (Yes, even when you think you already know the answer.)
  • Get feedback to ensure decisions take people into account.
  • Recognize that relationships impact results—ignoring people dynamics can derail your success.
  • Don’t overlook commitments to people just to push forward a task.
  • Encourage a safe environment where employees feel comfortable sharing their thoughts. (Hint: a high-B, low-A employee might agree just to keep the peace—make sure they feel safe speaking up!)

The People-Oriented Communicator

Reference Profiles: Altruist, Persuader, Collaborator
You thrive on connection, collaboration, and team energy. Your leadership style is persuasive, empathetic, and inclusive—you naturally bring people together and ensure everyone feels heard. You’d rather talk through a decision than make a snap call, and you value team input.

Pros vs. Cons:
✅ Builds strong relationships and fosters a positive team culture.
✅ Naturally gathers buy-in and consensus from employees.
❌ May struggle to make tough decisions that not everyone agrees with.
❌ Can get sidetracked with conversations, losing sight of objectives and deadlines.

How to Pivot:

  • Hold people accountable—don’t avoid tough conversations or feedback just to preserve relationships.
  • Clearly communicate goals and outcomes to keep meetings productive.
  • Balance team input with decisiveness or a formal deadline—sometimes, you need to make the call.
  • Keep your eye on the prize! Stretch yourself to prioritize outcomes over ongoing discussions.
  • Get to the point—your team will appreciate clarity.

Make Your Communication Style Work for You

Every leader has a natural communication style, and while there’s no right or wrong way to lead, understanding how you show up—and how your team responds—can make all the difference. The key is adaptability. Great leaders don’t just rely on their default mode; they adjust based on the people around them. So, take a moment to reflect: Are you communicating in a way that truly connects with your team? If not, it’s time to pivot.
